WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
We're so excited to have you join us on your yoga and wellness journey! Yoga is an individual practice toward physical and mental well-being, but we know firsthand that it can be hard to practice in solitary. That's why UNWIND's goal is to create accessible and approachable yoga and wellness practices for all ages and practice levels....
What is Yoga?
Yoga is a practice that stretches back over 5,000 years and focuses on the triad of the mind, the body, and the spiritual. While the practice originates in India, it has been brought into the modern world with some (though little!) adjustments. There are many different kinds of yoga, but all focus on the unification of the mind, body, and spiritual aspects through physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation.
What is Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa is the most common form of yoga practiced in the western world characterized by stringing postures together to create a flow of poses. Each vinyasa classes ends with a 5-10 minutes savasana, or reclining resting posture. These classes will vary from beginner to advanced typically described by levels 1, 2, and 3. You might also see words like slow flow or power in the description to help differentiate the style of the class.
What is Yin Yoga?
Yin yoga is wonderful counter balance to active people that workout often to help stretch out the connective tissue and muscles in the body that become tight from repetitive movement/motion. Typically done in a seated, reclining or kneeling position, each posture is held for 2-3 minutes allowing the muscles to stretch and release. Because you’re holding poses for a longer period of time than you would in other traditional types of yoga, yin yoga helps you stretch and lengthen those rarely-used or over-used tissues while also teaching you how to breathe through the stretch and sit with your thoughts.
What is Restorative Yoga?
Restorative yoga is the art of conscious relaxation to restore the nervous system and help release deeply held tensions from the body and mind. In restorative, you are guided through a series of easy, supported poses held for extended periods of time under the right conditions (including the use of many props) to tip the balance from “fight or flight” mode into maximum relaxation. Science tells us that, under the conditions set in restorative yoga, immediate effects on heart rate, blood pressure and brain activity are possible. Emphasis on complete muscular relaxation and comfort are emphasized to achieve a quiet state of mind and body. The goal of restorative is just that, restore the mind and body leaving you feeling nourished, well-rested and refreshed.
Do you offer other classes besides yoga?
Yes, we do! Yoga is a wonderful practice but we also offer other complimentary classes including, Pilates, NIA - Mind Body Fitness, QiGong, and more. All classes will also focus on the health of your mind and body.
Do I need my own mat?
Normally, the answer would be no, we do have mats available for anyone to use. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not making our mats available for general use. We can however, sell you one of our studio mats for $5 to ensure safety for you and everyone else. Please see your instructor for assistance with this option.
Do I need to be a member in order to take a class?
No! Membership is not necessary to take a class or workshop at our studio. However, buying a membership package allows you to save money on classes and workshops if you plan to attend classes regularly. For example, if you want to join us once a week for a group yoga class, you'll save an estimated $15/month with a 4-Group Class Monthly Membership rather than paying the non-member, drop-in price for each class.
You can check out our Membership Pricing page for packages and prices, but we encourage everyone--whether a member or not--to join us in our studio!
What should I wear to class?
Yoga is a time to relax and UNWIND, so it's important you're comfortable during your practice. Standard dress for yoga is loose fitting, comfortable clothing. Examples are yoga pants and a t-shirt or sleeveless tank, but sweats in place of yoga pants are just as great if you're more comfortable in them! Keep in mind that yoga does include inverted postures and poses, so shirts you can tuck in or that won't ride up during inverted poses will keep you in the moment instead of reaching to adjust clothing during poses.
The studio is temperature controlled, so no need to worry about planning for extreme temperatures. But if you get chilly in winter or hot during the summer, feel free to layer or plan accordingly.
Are minors under 18 years allowed to come to class?
If your teenage yogi wants to join in class, they are more than welcome! We usually suggest that one be at least 12 years or older so that they can maintain focus for the hour long class and respect the practice and those around them.
If your younger child would like to participate in yoga, we have many yoga classes designed specifically for kids. These include classes for those 2-3 years, 4-8 years, 8+ years, and 9-12 years, as well as the occasional family classes. Classes are designed with specific age groups in mind. At UNWIND, we believe that all age levels can benefit from a yoga practice, and yoga has been proven to build confidence and strength in both body and mind, so we make sure to include our younger practitioners whenever we can.
Check out our Yoga for Kids page for more information.
What do I do with my shoes, coats and other belongings?
Again, this will be handled differently during this time of COVID-19. Under normal circumstances, we have hooks for coats, place for shoes and shelves inside the studio for purses and other valuables. For now, we will provide bins outside the studio for every person to place their shoes and belongings in, which you will take with you to your designated spot in the studio. These measures are hopefully temporary, but your cooperation is appreciated.
